“The results of this method often seem to be so great and improbable, that some people use it as an excuse for never dealing with it thoroughly.” “Although nobody would drive a car which was built in 1900, many people believe, that psychology has hardly changed since the time of Siegmund Freud. Those people would be astonished, if they knew, what actually happened. Meanwhile there were many revolutions in psychology which enormously widened our idea of brain and our abilities of change.” The basic idea of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) has been developed in the USA in the seventies. Richard Bandler and John Grinder watched and analyzed the work of the most successful therapists of the time: Milton F. Erickson (hypnosis-therapy), Fritz Perls (shape-therapy), and Virginia Satir (family therapy). Although all three of them worked therapeutically different, soon there turned out some strategies of success common to all. From the things the methods of therapy have in common, Richard Bandler and John Grinder deduced the rules and models which they started to try out and employ in their therapeutic work. They did not develop a new theory, bur a new model from the successes of well-tried methods, with which a fast, deep, and durable change was actually possible. Neuro – is on behalf of the nervous system. We are talking about the digestion of stimuli in the brain. To put it in another way the mental connections of our five senses, with whose help we can see, hear, feel, taste, and smell. Linguistic – means our ability to use a language and to express our mental state by the use certain words and language expressions. It also means non-verbal communication like posture, gestures as well as ways of thinking and convictions. Programming – following the modern science of computers, this means, that our thoughts, feelings, and actions usually are nothing else than habitual programmes, which we can always change by revising the software in our bio-computer (the brain). In other words: NLP imparts the basics about how our brain works. “Every one of us has tried sometime or other to change something in our mind, to put aside old habits, to resolve a conflict, or to develop a new conviction. Put another way: Over and over again it happens in life that we all wish to be different from what we are like.” Steve Andreas and Charles Faulkner write in their Practice Course NLP. Every one of us has also experienced, that the desired success did not come, although we made a hard effort to cause something positive. On the other hand from time to time there occur changes in our lives we never even thought about before, and which seem to turn up apparently by themselves. For instance we have started to wear different clothes or have developed a new hobby, without thinking about it. We simply changed our minds. How does the change happen? Is there truly a method which can explain on the one hand why it is sometimes so difficult for us to change ourselves, and which shows and explains on the other hand, why we sometimes change with an incredible ease without consciously wanting to? When the pain becomes too severe, we recognize at the latest, that the time for a change has come. At the same time the pain indicates that up to now we have not used a suitable method and therefore need to try something else. Tedious struggles without any success show that our old method does not serve its purpose. Then it is time to try something different. Pain, struggle, suffering, and waiting indicate that we need to tackle our problems with a new procedure! This method comprises a couple of abilities you can easily deal with.
